Zulhijjah – The last month (month number 12) in Islamic calendar marked the end of the year and during this month the Hajj or commonly known as ‘Haji’ here in Malaysia will took place.
Literally, Zulhijjah means “Possessor of the Pilgrimage.” Pilgrims from all around the world will congregate at Makkah to visit the Holy Land and the Kaabah to perform the Hajj which falls on the eighth, ninth and the tenth of Zulhijjah. The Day of Arafa will takes place on the nine of the month while the Eid al-Adha, the “Festival of the Sacrifice”, begins on the tenth day and ends on the thirteenth. The Hajj is also one of the Pillars in Islam and also the largest congregation on earth being done yearly.
We are here to share the spirit of Hajj and Zulhijjah as some of the Zuikoholics member have the opportunity of going to Makkah and most of us here are glad to share our own perspective of Zulhijjah from the view of our lenses.

Hari Raya Haji (Eid al-Adha) is one of the many important day celebrated by Muslims to honor the willingness of Nabi Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son Nabi Ismail as an act of obedience towards Allah (God) which in the end Allah intervened to provide him with a sheep for the sacrifice instead.
During this celebration, there will be an Eid al-Adha prayer in the morning similar to the one during Eid-al-Fitr. Then, usually right after the prayer, the Muslims will then perform the sacrifice which usually are cows in Malaysia as the symbol the event mentioned. The “Korban” (Malay terms for the animals sacrifice) have to meet certain age and quality standards or else the animal is considered an unacceptable sacrifice.
The meat from the Korban will then be divided into 3 parts. 1/3 for the family. 1/3 for relatives, friends and neighbors and 1/3 to the poor and needy as being practiced in the Islamic teachings.
In Malaysia the “Korban” is performed with the spirit of togetherness. People will gather, usually at the mosque and they will work together to complete the event. In Malay, they call it “gotong-royong”.
