The Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) invites photographers and photo enthusiasts, professionals as well as amateurs, to join its Photography Competition this year, themed: “Uniquely FRIM”.
The photographs must be taken around the FRIM main campus in Kepong or at FRIM Research Stations in Pasoh, Negeri Sembilan, Bidor, Perak or Mata Ayer, Perlis between 1 and 30 September 2012.
For free entrance to the FRIM campus in Kepong, participants must register in person at the FRIM Corporate Management Unit (Block D2, located next to the FRIM Library), 8.00am-5.00pm from Monday to Friday, and at the FRIM One-Stop Centre (Block D6), 9.00am-4.00pm during weekends or public holidays.
The objective of the competition is to enhance environmental awareness and appreciation of the uniqueness of FRIM, which has been declared a national heritage on 10 May 2012.
It also aimed at promoting FRIM as not only a leading research institute contributing to the conservation of tropical forests, but also as one of the country’s most popular tourism sites.
There are three categories of participants: A) Open (aged above 17 years); B) FRIM Research Stations (Pasoh, Bidor and Mata Ayer) and C) Students (below 17), and the competition is also open to foreign nationals residing in the country. The deadline for submission of entries: 30 September 2012, before 12 noon.
The size of the printed image must be 8RW (8” X 12”) and entries for the different categories should be differentiated by the colour of the A3-size mounting board with black for Category A, blue for B, and white for C. Each participant is allowed a maximum of five (5) entries, to be submitted by post or hand-delivered to “Urusetia Pertandingan Fotografi FRIM 2012, Unit Pengurusan Korporat, Institut Penyelidikan Perhutanan Malaysia (FRIM), 52109 Kepong, Selangor Darul Ehsan, Malaysia”.
Winners will each receive a certificate of participation plus the following prizes:

The winners will be announced via FRIM website in October 2012 and the prize presentation ceremony as well as an exhibition of the selected outstanding photographs will be held at FRIM at a later date.
In conjunction with the photography competition, FRIM will conduct two one-day workshops on nature photography for secondary students who are members of their respective school photography clubs. The first workshop targeting students in Selangor will be held in FRIM, Kepong, on 8 Sept 2012, whilst the second workshop for students around the FRIM Research Station in Mata Ayer, Perlis, on 15 Sept.
Participants will learn basic techniques and tips on various aspects of nature photography. The workshop aims to promote nature photography as a hobby as a way of inculcating environmental awareness amongst the younger generations.
